'MOS 28th BIRTHDAY PART 2 w/ DJ HARVEY'

On October 5th, after his traditional summer hiatus playing in various exotic locations, the Balearic prince DJ Harvey made his triumphant return to London alongside a dazzling line-up to celebrate 28 years of pioneering dance music with Ministry of Sound. On a cold rainy night in South London, a cosmic disco exploration was happening inside the club. The Menendez Brothers' vintage club brand 'Feelings' hosted room 103. Innovative East-London duo Payfone and sci-fi obsessed Space Dimension Controller sparked the atmosphere in the central hub of the club with sonic selections, welcoming dance cadets with a formidable mix of electro-funk and astral disco. Next door, in the notorious main room (where the magic happens), Harvey was transcending through the realms of dance music at his own steady pace. Róisín Murphy’s passionate Spanish cries of ‘Ancora’ echoed as he kept things at a slow tempo; ranging through sleazy beats and mind-altering slow trance material to enchant the dancefloor at the start of his all night long mission. As per usual, we were mesmerised by a host of unknown Harvey treats. You never know if he’s playing a record worth £500 or the soundtrack to an Italian porno. He keeps you guessing, whilst in a state of total awe, ecstasy and wonder.

Elsewhere at the party, the loft was hosted by Harvey’s friends from the world-famous Pikes Ibiza. Camilo Miranda and Dirty Dave delivered an intriguing insight into the sounds of their magical party palace, pulling out the downtempo goods from their vault of dreamy disco and paying homage to Harvey, dropping ‘Je Vulesse’ from his new comp. Heading downstairs, fellow Balearic royalty Alfredo evolved the soundtrack to 90s and contemporary house music in room 103. Formerly holding down residencies and playing incredible sets at the legendary Space Ibiza, he is revered as a legend in dance music. Adopting a forward-thinking approach, he likes to leave his past influences behind and was dropping bangers like Modjo's ‘Lady Hear Me Tonight’. The Menendez Brothers continued from Alfredo in style with an assortment of dancefloor weapons including Gat Décor 's timeless piano house anthem 'Passion'. Hailing from Colombia, the versatile pair have taken the UK by storm, delivering party-starting grooves and spreading their fun-loving, infectious energy at prestigious club nights across the country. They are two guys who genuinely love what they do and their presence always benefits the party.

Back in The Box (main room); when the clock struck 4am, Harvey grinned, dusted off his treasure chest of rare disco gems and injected a surge of energy into the dancefloor. That 2 hours was a whirlwind. We were sucked into a time and space altering black-disco-hole. Everyone in the room was in their element and it all went by in a flash. His new shit hot edit of Claude Jay’s ‘Find Your Light’ was a particular highlight amongst the intense wave of blistering disco heat. It was the end of the night that forms a lasting, less hazy memory for me. Instead of going 130bpm all guns blazing to close like he did on his previous visit to the Ministry, Harvey cranked it right down and played a couple of deeper records. To be on such a high and hear The Blue Nile’s blissful ‘Headlights on the Parade’ and Duran Duran’s emotional ‘Ordinary World’ was a euphoric feeling. The Harvey community smiled at each other and said their ‘until next times’ whilst a few shouted ‘you just get better and better each fucking time!’ I left feeling enlightened and couldn’t care less about the pouring rain or waiting an hour for the tube to open at 7am. Until next time Harv!
