'TESSELATE WITH CHAOS IN THE CBD, MAX GRAEF, AND SEB WILDBLOOD' (4/11/17)
On Saturday
the 4th of November, Tessellate were in control of proceedings for the second
event of their winter series at Corsica Studios. They delivered a superb line
up, with their long-time 'Rhythm Section' friends - Chaos in the CBD headlining
the night in room 1, with outrageously good support from the likes of the
Berlin based techno wizard - Max Graef and Corsica favourite - Seb Wildblood.
Kiara Scuro was also on the bill, warming up the crowd with some funky tunes
before Seb Wildblood cued up his first record. As we always like to see, the
DJs were all playing on vinyl - giving them a chance to reveal their incredible
collections to the crowd.
Seb
Wildblood began the main proceedings in room 1, taking over from Kiara Scuro at
around 1am. Having bumped into him just before he jumped behind the decks, he explained
that he'd just got back from a short tour in India and was very excited to be
playing, as this event was going to be one of his last London shows for a
little while. He has gained recognition through producing some wonderful
records which usually take an ambient jazzy style. His set on the night
incorporated these vibes, however as expected; more upbeat, faster tempo
records to match the desires of the crowd. One thing I was particularly
impressed about, was the variety in Seb's set. He was playing all kinds of
records ranging from jazzy house with sweet saxophone sounds over a pounding
beat, to ambient techno tracks which all together produced great vibes. His
mixing was also notably superb.
Whilst Seb
was providing these vibes in room 1, the second room was under control by Max
Graef. Tessellate coordinated the event to perfection. Whilst you could
experience more chilled vibes in room 1 you could discover a whole new electric
feeling when entering this second room. It was pitch black, with a few flashing
coloured lights here and there, and then Max Graef at the forefront of the
room, visible only through the green lights being emitted from the decks. He
was a musical god shining out of the darkness, taking everyone in the room on a
techno journey, ranging through some heavy techno, whilst slowing down the
vibes occasionally with some more chilled records that carried some catchy
piano riffs. He was also mixing these records into each other with absolute
perfection, whilst sipping on cans of Amstel and having a great time. It was
one of the most impressive performances I've seen in a long time, as he was
able to keep the energy high all the way through until close.
Whilst Max
was controlling room 2 until close; in room 1, Seb handed over to Chaos in the
CBD at around 3am. These guys are really on the rise at the moment and after
seeing them play their records live, it's evident why there is so much hype
around them. They drew in the majority of the crowd as they ventured through a
variety of records in their vast collection. They continued the same sort of
vibes that Seb had been providing and began to introduce some more housey
records, including newly released on the 'world building' label - 'Paraiso 89'
by Azura which gained a great reception from the crowd. The brothers - Ben and
Louis Helliker-Hales, all the way from New Zealand exceeded expectations as
headliners and rounded off the night in style.
Corsica
Studios co-ordinated by Tessellate is a match made in underground dance music
heaven. The variety of great records on offer, being mixed by some of the most
talented DJs around, with a great sound system was the perfect way to spend a
night. For the third event of their winter series, Tessellate will be welcoming
'Dixon Avenue Basement Jams' for another Corsica Studios takeover, with Denis
Sulta headlining. This is set to be another phenomenal night.
