'FEVER 105's INTIMATE SPACES #1 WITH RED GREG & MAFALDA' (28/10/17)

After two very successful summer events at Oval Space, Fever 105 returned with a new series of 'intimate spaces' for a back to basics, Halloween - themed disco night at the cool, underground 70s influenced venue - the 'Mule Bar' in Shoreditch. This event was much smaller than the normal Fever 105 parties and the venue hosted around 300 disco lovers, whom came dressed for the occasion in a variety of different spooky outfits. The intimate space consisted of a groovy yellow patterned dance floor, surrounded by various retro sofas. It was the perfect environment for the original disco scene trying to be created. Two seriously good selectors - DJ Red Greg & Mafalda were hired to spin rare groove, soul, funk and disco all night long behind the rotary mixer, which resulted in strictly good vibes only.

First to be in control of the vibes was London-based, Portuguese DJ - Mafalda, whom co-runs Melodies International alongside Floating Points, specialising in releasing the best rare disco and soul records. She is fast establishing herself as a superb selector in the underground disco scene. Her unique taste of soulful and jazzy sounds, coupled with her energy behind the decks was a perfect way to kick off the night. She provided a non-stop, energetic atmosphere to the party whilst visibly loving every moment of it; grooving around behind the decks, in between crate digging for the next rare gem to play out of her selection. Red Greg was enjoying Mafalda's set beside the decks, eagerly waiting to unleash the power of his collection. Mafalda brang her set to a close at around 1:30am, with the fitting joyful, uplifting record - 'Ecology' by Anubis. It was now time for part 2 of the night, and Red Greg began his transition from Mafalda's jazzy disco extravaganza into his super soulful disco.

Although he is not the most well known DJ around, he is certainly one of the most respected. Not only does he have an incredible selection of fast paced, soulful disco records that make you want to dance all night long; he mixes them into each other with supreme precision. His technique has been perfected through years of playing at parties all around the world, as his love affair with disco music stems all the way back to the 80s. On the night, this mixing was particularly stunning - each record he played seemed to flow in to each other superbly. He was more reserved behind the decks than Mafalda, but was evidently loving the disco equally as much, receiving much respect from the disco dudes and divas in attendance for the immense skills that he provided. The set consisted of super soulful, retro disco through out; which brang nothing but joy to the dance floor. Fronzena Harris' 'Lovetime Guarantee' was a personal favourite of ours, and is a good example of the vibes he was providing all night long. Records such as this provide disco lovers with a feeling of pure ecstasy and Red Greg was able to just keep on delivering this feeling. The energy was immense from start to finish. It was impossible not to have a good time.

This was another great night for Fever 105, whom seem to have a special talent for providing some of the best disco nights around. The new series of 'intimate spaces' with the basic set up of a rotary mixer, world class selectors and a great sound system, seems to be sparking a revival of the golden days of disco. This is attracting the older crowd who want to relive the experience, whilst also appealing to more and more young people, as the youthful generation recognises the disco sound as something special. We can't wait for the next 'intimate spaces' event to be announced and in the mean time, the Fever 105 disco orchestra are returning for a Christmas disco wonderland which promises to be another great night with a guaranteed feel-good atmosphere.
