'DJ HARVEY @ MINISTRY OF SOUND' (8/4/17)
On Saturday the 8th of April, 2017, DJ Harvey
kicked off his European tour with his first residency in the south banks of
London at a lively disco in Ministry of Sound. Upon arrival, it was evident
that this was going to be a night to remember, full of disco loving groovers
from all over. The streets were dead, but the club was alive with it's own electric atmosphere, and the gleaming
disco ball; situated outside, enhanced the enormous excitement that surrounded
the event.
Harvey was situated in ‘The Box’, a medium sized room, packed out with disco balls ranging from all sizes, but all equally as stunning when hit by the lasers that were protruding the room. This room united all kinds of different people, whom all shared the same love in the music. There were 60 year old men climbing up on ledges to dance by the speakers for hours on end, various different glittery and colourful outfits on display, and people from various countries who had gathered to see this living legend play an extraordinary 7 hour set of rare, geniously selected records. There was even two men who had travelled all the way from Bulgaria to immerse themselves in the experience.
The set consisted of a wide range of soulful, jazzy disco tunes, with some underground and techno dance music also featuring. Harvey is a master behind the decks and is famous for playing his audiences rare, unknown records that work every time. One of his taglines for this event was ‘fuck Brexit let’s dance’ and the music he played certainly made anyone just want to dance all night long, it was so good you could almost feel yourself getting lost in the music. The tempo gradually built up as the night became morning, as Harvey ranged from 70s disco remixes of tracks such as ‘Hooked’ by Sir Own, to more modern tracks such as ‘What’s a girl to do?’ by Fatima Yamaha. A particular favourite of mine was when Harvey played Greg Wilson's 'Boogie Monster' midway through the set which generated a lot of energy in the room.

As Harvey rounded off his set after 7 hours of providing pure
ecstasy for the crowd, the united disco lovers dispersed outside into a bright,
spring morning seeming very content. It is events like this which
remind me of why I spend ridiculous amounts of money to attend. The music
was unbeatable, the crowd were there purely to enjoy the music and have a great time, the club was looking and sounding fantastic
and the DJ was a living legend. This is the perfect recipe for a good time, and
if you have never been to an event like this, it’s time to book your tickets
for the residency part 2.
